Deleting a container in Google Tag Manager (GTM) can be helpful if you no longer need it, have created a duplicate, or want to clean up your workspace. However, it’s important to remember that this action is irreversible. Once you delete a container, it’s gone for good, along with all its tags, triggers, and variables.
Before you proceed, make sure you’ve backed up your container if you might need it in the future. You can export the container as a ZIP file in the “Versions” section of the container settings.
Here’s how to delete a container from Google Tag Manager:
- Go to the Admin section. Click on the “Admin” button in the left-hand sidebar.
-
Select the container you want to delete. In the “Container” column, click on the name of the container you want to remove.
-
Open the container settings. Click on the three dots menu (…) in the top right corner of the container card.
-
Click on “More settings”.
-
Select “Delete”. A confirmation dialog will appear.
- Click “Delete” again to confirm. The container will be moved to the trash can.
Remember:
- Deleted containers are held in the trash can for 30 days before being permanently deleted. You can restore a container from the trash can during this period.
- If you have collaborators on the container, they will be notified when you delete it.
Alternative method:
You can also delete a container directly from the “Account Overview” page. Just click on the three dots menu (…) next to the container name and select “Delete”.
Additional tips:
- Before deleting a container, make sure it’s not being used on any live websites.
- If you’re unsure whether you should delete a container, you can always contact Google Tag Manager support for help.
